As part of our Blog Series, Living the New Story: Myth, Magic & Miracles, we invited programme participant, Martin Dixon-Tyrer, to share his personal myth – his new story – as it unfolded throughout our recently completed 8-month journey….
We currently live in separation. The world that created us is nurturing and abundant, cooperative and generous. The Old Story of a hostile world, a struggle for survival, individualism, competition, heroism, domination, mastery of nature, and scarcity is a world we have created. Our lived experience of separation is, precisely, the gap between the world that created us and the world we created.
We are not islands. We are interdependent – with other humans, with non-human animals, and with the planet. At a profound level we understand this and intuitively know how to live well, but social constructions stand in the way of us seeing and acting on this. Our work is to deconstruct these Old Story structures, shedding what keeps us apart, and to consciously build and live New Story structures that are aligned with life.
This is practical work, Praxis. It is living well and harmoniously on earth, supporting and loving each other, practising kindness and generosity and service: a declaration of the kind of future we are aiming toward. It is Love in Action.
Personal healing is a necessary first step; however, it is important to keep perspective and not become stuck in the process. The point is to heal enough to be able to act, to engage in Praxis. Beyond a certain point, community is essential – the journey is not a solo journey.
Praxis consists of acts of Will under the direction of Mind. Mind (Geist) is the container for maxims and plans, the result of Wisdom processed by the Intellect.
Wisdom does not come from Mind, Intellect, or Emotions. It is accessed through a combination of Contemplation, Intuition and Study:
- Contemplation is immersion in nature, quietly observing and listening, sometimes assisted by visionary plants.
- Intuition is our means of accessing the wisdom inherent in us, in our Heart and our Soul. Intuition is qualitatively different to feelings.
- Study is learning about and integrating four wisdoms: the wisdom of indigenous people; the wisdom of oppressed people; the wisdom of nature; and the wisdom of science.
Intuition, awareness of other levels of consciousness, synchronicity, deep connection with others perhaps from past lives – these are not extraordinary or special experiences. Indeed, they are rather normal. Our Old Story social constructs tell us that they are not real, so we have tended to discount, distrust, or ignore them. No longer.
The Old Story implies an end state of individual independence, safety through power and force, abundance through plundering of nature, and imposition of a single Story for all. The New Story does not have an end state, but rather is about living, growing and serving, interdependently and in harmony. The New Story is not a single story – there are diverse ways to live, and each way of living is a beautiful, fluid, evolving expression of Wisdom and interdependence.

This reflection forms part of our Blog Series, Living the New Story: Myth, Magic & Miracles. We are deeply grateful to Martin for sharing his new story with our Findhorn New Story Community. Be sure to read our other contributions in the series.
