Inspirational 11-year-old indigenous environmental hip hop activist, Itzcuauhtli Martinez, is on a silence strike until world leaders take action on Climate Change. Itzcuauhtli writes…..
My talking strike for climate action has been harder than I ever thought it would be! Since October 27th I have not spoken a word. The only time I used my voice was performing at two eco-hip hop shows with the Earth Guardians. Spreading our message through our music is the only time I will use my voice. My friends and teachers keep asking how long I will keep this silent strike going and how will it make a difference anyway. What I hope, is that my silence will inspire others to speak up on behalf the world we are being left with!
What keeps me going is seeing all your awesome comments, pictures and support here on Facebook and at ClimateSilenceNow.org.
I used to think the people who make decisions at climate talks were the world leaders. But I went to the Rio +20 UN climate talks in Brazil and it seemed like all they do is talk. Now I’m thinking maybe they aren’t the world leaders maybe the world leaders are us. Maybe we have to lead with actions, because those guys who are just talking aren’t getting anything done and it is endangering the future of everyone one of us on this planet.
On December 10th, for one hour, or even the whole day we are asking people to join us in an act of silence for climate action. When the silent strike is complete – we need you to speak up about climate change and never stop. PLEASE Sign up to join us in an hour or more of silence on December 10th. Wear a green band on your left arm and stay tuned for more actions!
This will be the first of several actions. We need our voice to grow so loud that the world knows that WE ARE THE LEADERS! Please spread the message far. #climatesilencenow #ourfuturematters
