12 May 2018 Leave a Comment

"The new president of Costa Rica has announced a plan to ban fossil fuels and become the first fully decarbonised country in the world. Carlos Alvarado, a former journalist, told a crowd of thousands during his inauguration speech on Wednesday this week: “Decarbonisation is the great task of our generation and Costa Rica must be one of the first countries in the world to accomplish it, if not the first.” He added: “We have the titanic and beautiful task of abolishing the use of fossil fuels in … Continue reading

"The 48 members of the Climate Vulnerable Forum made the decision while attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Marrakech, Morocco. US Youth Win The Right To Sue US Government For Inaction On Climate Change

16 November 2016 1 Comment

"A group of US youth, ranging in age from 9 to 20, were granted the right to sue the federal government and fossil fuel industry over climate change and environmental degradation that endangers their future. "More specifically, they accused the government and private sector of endangering their rights to life, liberty, property, and vital public trust resources. Renowned climate scientist Dr. James E Hansen is also acting as plaintiff in the case. The lawsuit is one of several state and federal … Continue reading

Norway pledges to become climate neutral by 2030

17 June 2016 Leave a Comment

"Parliament approves radical proposal of accelerated emissions cuts and carbon offsetting to achieve climate goal 20 years earlier than planned. "The high profile climate motion followed a zero deforestation parliamentary vote earlier this month, which made Norway the first nation to ban public procurements that contribute to rainforest destruction." Norway becomes the world’s first country to commit to zero deforestation

6 June 2016 1 Comment

"Norway has become the first country in the world to commit to zero deforestation. The Norwegian parliament’s Standing Committee on Energy and the Environment made the pledge in a recommendation on the government’s Action Plan on Nature Diversity. The committee requested that the government “impose requirements to ensure that public procurements do not contribute to deforestation of the rainforest.” "The Rainforest Foundation of Norway called on other countries to follow Norway’s lead and … Continue reading

Only a Revolution of Love can Save the Climate | Charles Eisenstein

"I am certain we will not “save our planet” (or at least the ecological basis of civilization) by merely being more clever in our deployment of Earth’s “resources”. We will not escape this crisis so long as we see the planet and everything on it as instruments of our utility. The present climate change narrative veers too close to instrumental utilitarian logic — that we should value the earth because of what will happen to us if we don’t. "Where did we develop the habit of making choices based … Continue reading

Sønderborg: the little-known Danish town with a zero carbon master plan

23 October 2015 Leave a Comment

"Denmark joins more than a hundred places around the world making business-friendly zero carbon commitments as they transition away from fossil fuels.... "Almost completely surrounded by water, the little-known Danish town of Sønderborg is no stranger to flooding from both seawater rising along its coastline and heavy rainfall. With climate change ensuring more of both, Sønderborg is learning to tackle the immediate problems of adapting to a warming world while becoming part of the broader … Continue reading

Epic Change by Kenny Ausubel

"Everything is up for grabs and everything is at stake. As Paul Gilding has observed, our normal human response is to be late and then fast. As the world has plunged from urgency to emergency, emergency responders are coming out in force. "The invisible hand of the climate is trumping the invisible hand of the market. We're at the start of the biggest, fastest cultural, economic and industrial transformation in history. "The decline and fall of the fossil fuel regime is at hand. Coal is in … Continue reading

Thank you to our own Roger Doudna, who is also featured in the portrait project, for sharing this post. Roger is a long term resident of the Findhorn Community, an ecovillage in the north of Scotland. He lives in a self-built house made from a whiskey barrel. "We all know about climate change in a sweeping and abstract way; we understand that sea levels are rising, that coastlines are in danger, that animal populations are dwindling, and that we can no longer tame weather patterns and natural … Continue reading

Activists promise largest climate civil disobedience ever at Paris summit

10 October 2015 Leave a Comment

"Thousands expected to take part in ‘red line’ blockades of Paris climate summit, after two weeks of colourful protests that have been dubbed ‘the Climate Games’.... “The redlines idea strikes just the right balance between ‘shut it down’ and ‘do your job’,” the author and campaigner Naomi Klein told the Guardian. “I also think that it is strong enough to grab the narrative, which will be critical if governments try to sell a bad deal as a success.” "On the last day of the summit - 11 or 12 … Continue reading
