As part of our Blog Series, How Findhorn’s New Story Initiative Enhances My Life, we invited community member Karen Elliott to share what the New Story means to her at this extraordinary, yet often challenging time in our human evolution….
How did you discover Findhorn’s New Story Initiative?
I came across the Findhorn Foundation’s 2016 documentary An Enquiry into a New Story for Humanity: Change the Story, Change the World online, which I found inspiring and insightful. This led me to sign up to the newsletter, which is how I found out about the Living the New Story online course in 2017.
What inspired you to participate in our Living the New Story online learning journeys?
I’m always learning new things and this journey fits my conviction that in order to create a more positive and caring world we need to change the stories we tell each other and ourselves: about the nature of the universe, about failure and success, about consumerism and sustainability and about our relationship to our Earth. It seems to me that the stories of the dominant global cultural, fictional and factual, have led us to a place where we are out of harmony with Nature and what is important in life.
How does our New Story work align with your values?
I learn so much from your work! The speakers are all people who understand that we need to tell new stories to become better guardians of our planet and better at how we relate to others. We all want to be more evolved and to find ways to live more fulfilling, meaningful lives.
What contribution has participation in our work made to your life?
The first New Story journey felt more like attending a university course. I learned so much but I wasn’t as deeply involved as I have become this time. I don’t think buddy groups existed then, although I’m not sure, maybe I didn’t connect to the course on that level. I think sharing the sessions with others deepens the experience and as we meet weekly, the lessons flow into our lives more easily. I have started being more productive and focused, doing weekly planning to fulfill my goals. I have a clearer idea of how I want to spend my time and how the work we do on the New Story journey deepens my understanding of what is important to me.
What inspires you to continue to gift to us in support of our work into the future?
I think the work you do is so important. The New Story journey has contributed to my life in profound ways. Thank you so much for the amazing speakers you choose. They’ve helped me to develop a better understanding of who I am, what I want to do and to identify the ways I can grow. I’ve been surprised many times by the new insights I’ve gained from them. And thank you to Mattie, the host facilitator, for being a wonderful and wise presence throughout the journey.
