“Revolution is on the horizon, and youth are rising with the oceans to lead the movements that will shape our future”, says Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, a 16-year old Indigenous rapper, environmental activist (since age 6!).
“But the intergenerational movement that needs to be created is more important than anything. The future of the world is that balance between the new and that which has come before.
“We have found a way to fall out of love with the beauty of, not only the world, but with life itself. We have lost our connection with our humanity, and it’s our humanity that ties us all together. What happened to empowering people to create change?
“We have the power to create change. Our voices are more powerful than any corporate industry on the planet, than any government, than any law that is written against us. Our voices will overcome. That’s why we gotta remember that. People have power.”
Xiuhtezcatl is the award-winning Youth Director of Earth Guardians, a rapidly growing international organization of young activists, artists and musicians committed to protecting water, air, land and atmosphere. He brings alive the unparalleled intergenerational movements emerging to save our planet, as youth globally join hearts and hands against some of the world’s most powerful industries to take a stand for the future and build resilient communities.
This speech was given at the 2016 National Bioneers Conference.
